Chapter Eight

“Oh, no, no, no, no, no,” Savanna said, unable to look at the bed any longer. She turned away from both it and her husband. “I can’t sleep with you. I won’t sleep with you.”

“Well, thank you very much for that crushing blow to my ego. But considering the fact that the floor is ceramic tile, and there is no couch...You will sleep with me, sunshine.”

Savanna opened her mouth to protest once again but closed it instead. She wasn’t being fair. Only having one bed wasn’t Brodie’s fault, but what could she say to him? I can’t sleep with you because I don’t know if I can keep my hands to myself?

“I can be a gentleman, you know. Don’t you trust me?”

I don’t trust myself.

She couldn’t even stay in the same house with him without reliving every detail of their wedding night. If she had to sleep in the same bed with him, they’d need to get a few things straight right from the beginning.

“Ground rules,” she choked out.

“Sorry?”

Savanna turned back toward her husband though she couldn’t meet his gaze. Not after what she had been thinking about him. And her. “We need to set a few ground rules. You know, no hogging the covers. Keep to your own side.” She shrugged. “Ground rules.”

“Right.” Brodie nodded sharply. “Good idea. You go first.”

“Let’s see... No hogging the covers and keep to your own side. I think that about covers it.” She turned toward the bathroom, hoping to do as Bunny suggested and freshen up before their meal. The flight was hard for her even with Brodie at her side, and she needed a little time to get her bearings back. If she were lucky, she might even have time for a relaxing bath before they were called to eat.

“What about sex?”

Savanna stopped mid-step and whirled back around to face her husband. “I beg your pardon?”

“You know...” He cut his eyes to the side and raised his brows. “Sex.”

Savanna opened her mouth—to say what, she had no idea—so she closed it again. “I think—” she started, then faltered. She took a deep breath and let it out again.

All the while Brodie just stood there staring at her, waiting for her answer.

“I think,” she began a second time, “that... sex is...” A great idea. “Out of the question.” There. That wasn’t so hard now, was it?

She turned to go into the bathroom as a small chuckle escaped her husband. This time she didn’t turn.

“As much as I hate to admit it, sunshine, you’re right. Sex would only complicate matters. But if you take everything this seriously, it’s going to be one long weekend.”

“Y’all want a drink before dinner?”

“No!” Brodie and Savanna’s simultaneous and more-than-prompt answer to Red’s question re-sounded against the rough plaster walls of the study.

Brodie closed his eyes and tried to gather his wits—and his manners. “I mean, no, thank you.”

A drink was the very last thing he wanted. He needed a clear head tonight, but not to talk shop with Red.
