Chapter Eight
âOh, no, no, no, no, no,â Savanna said, unable to look at the bed any longer. She turned away from both it and her husband. âI canât sleep with you. I wonât sleep with you.â
âWell, thank you very much for that crushing blow to my ego. But considering the fact that the floor is ceramic tile, and there is no couch...You will sleep with me, sunshine.â
Savanna opened her mouth to protest once again but closed it instead. She wasnât being fair. Only having one bed wasnât Brodieâs fault, but what could she say to him? I canât sleep with you because I donât know if I can keep my hands to myself?
âI can be a gentleman, you know. Donât you trust me?â
I donât trust myself.
She couldnât even stay in the same house with him without reliving every detail of their wedding night. If she had to sleep in the same bed with him, theyâd need to get a few things straight right from the beginning.
âGround rules,â she choked out.
âSorry?â
Savanna turned back toward her husband though she couldnât meet his gaze. Not after what she had been thinking about him. And her. âWe need to set a few ground rules. You know, no hogging the covers. Keep to your own side.â She shrugged. âGround rules.â
âRight.â Brodie nodded sharply. âGood idea. You go first.â
âLetâs see... No hogging the covers and keep to your own side. I think that about covers it.â She turned toward the bathroom, hoping to do as Bunny suggested and freshen up before their meal. The flight was hard for her even with Brodie at her side, and she needed a little time to get her bearings back. If she were lucky, she might even have time for a relaxing bath before they were called to eat.
âWhat about sex?â
Savanna stopped mid-step and whirled back around to face her husband. âI beg your pardon?â
âYou know...â He cut his eyes to the side and raised his brows. âSex.â
Savanna opened her mouthâto say what, she had no ideaâso she closed it again. âI thinkââ she started, then faltered. She took a deep breath and let it out again.
All the while Brodie just stood there staring at her, waiting for her answer.
âI think,â she began a second time, âthat... sex is...â A great idea. âOut of the question.â There. That wasnât so hard now, was it?
She turned to go into the bathroom as a small chuckle escaped her husband. This time she didnât turn.
âAs much as I hate to admit it, sunshine, youâre right. Sex would only complicate matters. But if you take everything this seriously, itâs going to be one long weekend.â

âYâall want a drink before dinner?â
âNo!â Brodie and Savannaâs simultaneous and more-than-prompt answer to Redâs question re-sounded against the rough plaster walls of the study.
Brodie closed his eyes and tried to gather his witsâand his manners. âI mean, no, thank you.â
A drink was the very last thing he wanted. He needed a clear head tonight, but not to talk shop with Red.
